Aim
The aim of these courses is to provide a thorough review of methodologies and research topics pertinent to contemporary basic and clinical neuroscience. The aim of the molecular, cellular and systems neuroscience courses is to enable the student to understand the general strengths and weaknesses of the methods used in research papers, and to chose appropriate methods in his/hers own research. In the clinical course section various diagnostic clinical methods will be presented with a specific emphasis on practical hands-on demonstrations and discussions of present possibilities and limitations of the diagnostic instruments. The courses aim to provide the students with an optimal methodological background for their future research projects. Topics for this course: basic neurohistological techniques for detecting
molecules in tissue; Immunocyto- and histochemistry; Basic molecular cloning; Vesicle membrane fusion mediating fast
signal transmission - molecular aspects; Analysis of neuronal function with
fluorescent molecular probes; Large-scale genetic methods; Proteomics in neurobiology; Small genetic model systems in neurobiology; Molecular techniques in the study of neurodegeneration; Atomic Alzheimer - an introduction into X-ray
structure analysis in Alzheimer research; The phases of folding, denaturation and aggregation of neuro-proteins studied in computer simulations
or by vibrational spectroscopy; Molecular aspects of neuropharmacology
and transmitter re-uptake mechanisms; Bridging molecular and integrative neurobiology:
behavioral consequences of genetically manipulating specific neuron populations.
