Basic culturing of animal cells: theory and practice

Aim

Cell culturing is a very important tool for in vitro studies. This course includes both practical and theoretical knowledge of basic cell culturing techniques. The emphasis will be placed on a practical approach in laboratories equipped for research, mainly cell biological and molecular biology research. The course consists of lectures presenting the theory and practicals presenting a broad range of techniques. Among the techniques presented are routine culturing of cell lines, establishement of cell lines, freezing and thawing of cells, 96-well plate assays, detection of apoptosis, growth curves and growth kinetics, sampling of cells for various analyses and transfection. The students will be required to give a short presentation of their present or future field of research and how cell culture methodology is or will be used. The course leaders will also give a short presentation of their research and how cell culture methodology is used. A completed course gives the students sufficient knowledge to understand the principles of cell culturing and to be able to use this experimental system optimally on both a theoretical and pratical basis.
